With her passion, skills and dedication for horse welfare, 23 year old Grace Edwards knew that she wanted to pursue a career where she could help horses and their owners.
After initially looking into the veterinary profession, Grace realised that she could instead use her equine knowledge and natural ability with horses in a unique way, applying her expertise to retrain horses with behavioural problems, and educating owners to work with their animals to achieve realistic and achievable goals.
Unsure of which direction to take to make her ideas happen, Grace got in touch with local business start-up organisation Outset Torbay, to see if they could help her create her own job.
“I heard an advert for Outset Torbay on Heart FM and decided to text for information,” says Grace. “I felt I needed a little more direction, particularly around financial aspects as I really had little experience.”
Grace joined Outset Torbay’s free programme of Business Start-up workshops; a series of eight in-depth sessions that helped her look at critical aspects of her new venture including marketing, financial planning, costing and pricing and sales. She also received one-to-one support from her advisor.
“Outset provided me with the knowledge I needed to help make my new business viable, and has allowed me to forecast my finances. It has filled me with confidence and enabled me to succeed. My advisor Julie was inspiring and extremely supportive, helping me every step of the way.”
With ongoing support, Grace progressed to launch Grace Edwards Equine, a service that retrains horses with behavioural problems using tried and tested training methods to build solid foundations for nervous or troubled horses and their owners.
“I’m so lucky to be doing what I love and to have the countryside as my office! I’m now training across Devon and Somerset with a varied customer-base. The results speak for themselves and I am receiving fantastic feedback.”
Grace’s plans are to now expand the business into larger premises where she will have the space required to take in more horses, and to employ a member of staff.
