It was a natural combination of skills and passion that led Jacqui Shaw and Pauline Neal to consider starting their own business in Torbay.
The ambitious duo wanted to bring together their combined career experience of 50 years: Jacqui in sales and management for large international corporations, and Pauline in nursing, and later management, for the NHS.
“It all stemmed from a desire to run our own business and to provide employment for local people helping to stimulate the local economy,” says Jacqui. “We recognised that with the NHS going through well-publicised changes, resulting in potential longer patient waiting times, an opportunity existed to provide affordable private medical insurance that gives local people more choice on where and when they receive treatment.”
Jacqui and Pauline were referred to Outset Torbay by their mentor at South West Innovation Centres and went on to join the Introduction to Enterprise and Business Start-up workshops in Torquay.
“The Outset Torbay programme really gave us the confidence to develop our ideas into a business. Financials were certainly an ‘unknown’ for us, so the workshops on financial planning, together with specialist HMRC sessions, were just what we needed. All of the free support has enabled us to focus and build a solid business plan, and in a jargon-free and friendly environment where we could interact with others in the same boat!”
Jacqui and Pauline have gone on to become appointed representatives of WPA*, one of the leading UK health insurers, to start their business Coralline Health.
“We provide affordable healthcare insurance for businesses, specifically small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), as well as for self-employed people, individuals and their families.”
It is their strong ethical approach and passion for delivering great customer care that has led them to establish a health insurance business with a difference. “WPA are a not-for-profit provident, which means our customers are encouraged to claim and get value from their private medical, NHS Top Up and dental policies, without their premiums increasing as a result of a claim.”
In the four months since launching the business, Coralline Health is already exceeding its objectives. Ahead of plan they have already recruited an Account Manager from the local area to enhance the team and provide extra sales support.
“Our mission is to make Coralline Health the natural choice for local people and businesses in the South West to get affordable healthcare insurance. We want to build a long-term sustainable business with satisfied customers who will want to recommend our service because it’s first rate.”
