Mark Lane worked for many years in software and electrical engineering, specialising in theme work and animatronics. He then became involved with the coffee industry, but following a drastic reduction in work hours, had to completely rethink his career and channel his energies and skills in a new direction. “I wanted to put something different into Torbay! I was particularly intrigued by the marriage of theme work and coffee/food establishments and wondered if a themed coffee house would work in Torbay.”
Attending an Outset programme was the key to Mark’s success, having had some bad experiences in the past with other business courses.
“I approached Outset with caution, expecting the same old, same old… However I was most surprised! Outset was refreshing, fun and effective, and a pleasure to attend. It was obvious from the start that the Outset team had an invaluable background and expertise in business that students could draw upon.”
And so Neffy’s was created;
Mark and his staff constantly try-out new ideas, including the Kings’ rich Belgian hot chocolate range, and Neffy’s is also known and appreciated for stocking gluten-free products. Neffy’s is now developing a new chocolate range – fit for a King!
Mark credits Outset Torbay for helping him on his way: “Outset has been priceless for their genuine interest in my business and how they continue their support through follow-ups and networking events. Outset are always there at the end of the phone even when you’ve started trading.”
Mark is already employing two members of staff and planning for further growth… “Coffee bars are a place to escape, relax and get away from everything without breaking the bank! With that in mind, it’s my intention to expand to bigger premises and offer extra services, like themed parties and unique gifts, something different.”
