Simon & Jennie Waugh – Hire A Hubby Handyman

When Simon and Jennie Waugh relocated to Paignton from the Midlands with their young daughter, they decided to start a new life and a new business together that would offer them the flexibility to balance work with family life.

Practical and hands-on, Simon had a wealth of experience in building and maintenance, while part-time administrator Jennie brought her extensive organisational skills to the partnership.

Having fully modernised and extended two of their own residential properties, the duo looked to starting a professional handyman business and approached local business start-up support programme Outset Torbay for help to develop their idea.

“We needed some supportive advice and help to point us in the right direction,” says Simon. “The Outset programme was really enjoyable. Meeting new people who are all going through the same thought process and being able to share ideas has been invaluable.”

Simon and Jennie completed Outset’s programme of workshops, which helped them look at all aspects of their business idea, from market research and budgeting to marketing, financial planning and sales.

“Our advisor, Ali, has helped us fabulously! Helping with our business plan, providing ongoing support and being at the end of the phone if we needed her.”

Since completing the programme, Simon and Jennie have gone on to start their traditional handyman service, Hire a Hubby Handyman, providing high quality, value for money maintenance for local commercial and residential properties.

“We are willing to do all those little outstanding jobs that you never get around to or you can’t do!”

With the skills and knowledge gained from Outset Torbay, Simon and Jennie are now looking forward to building their client base and establishing an excellent reputation for their new business in Torbay.
