Artist makes waves at craft studios

An artist whose ceramic work is inspired by the local coastline is the latest creative talent to secure studio space for her business at Cockington Court’s Sea Change Craft Centre; home to a variety of highly skilled local artists and craft-workers, and open to the public.

Gail Trezise of Brixham started her ceramics business, Art Ceramics, after taking the life-changing decision at aged 50 to leave her job working in a care home kitchen to focus full-time on her passion for craft and ceramics.

With support from local business start-up support programme Outset Torbay, which helped her to gain the confidence and business skills she needed to take the leap into self-employment, she successfully applied for studio space at the Sea Change Craft Centre, acquiring the space and facilities to design, create and sell her work.

“I have two very different and distinctive styles of work,” says Gail. “My sculptural work consists of pods inspired by sea urchins and shells that are slip cast using a unique process which I developed while studying at South Devon College. My quirky little harbours are slab built and inspired by the coastal fishing ports of Devon and Cornwall.”

Gail is one of almost 100 local people who have fulfilled their ambition, turning a passion or skill into a full-time job with support from Outset Torbay, the £1.8m programme funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Torbay Development Agency to help people start their own businesses in Torbay.

“I have been able to achieve my goal by getting out of a kitchen and employing myself. I’m now continuing to focus on building my reputation for unique contemporary ceramics. My aim is to produce innovative, creative pieces of art and to eventually run workshops to inspire and promote the art of clay.”

Gail’s work is currently on sale in a number of retail outlets across Devon and Cornwall as well as being exhibited in galleries across the country. Sea Change Craft Studios are located at Cockington Court and open daily throughout the year.
