Awards inspire women in business

A CALL has gone out to inspirational women to take part in our new Women of Achievement campaign.

The Herald Express has launched the awards with business support groups Outset Torbay and Enterprising Women.

Helen Harman, programme director of Outset Torbay, said: “We are delighted to support the Women of Achievement campaign, helping to raise aspiration and celebrate the achievements of local women.”

Outset Torbay works with women, and other under-represented enterprise groups in Torbay, to overcome barriers to start and grow sustainable businesses.

Women launch 57 per cent of new businesses in Torbay which demonstrates the power women have to lead economic recovery.

Ms Harman said: “We encourage everyone to get involved by nominating women across the business and wider community for recognition in these prestigious awards.”

The categories are:

  • Contribution to the Community Award
  • Innovation Award
  • Mentor of the Year
  • Outset Torbay New Business of the Year
  • Rising Star of the Year
  • Woman of the Year
  • Women in the Workplace Award
  • Business of the Year.

Outset Torbay held a networking event as part of celebrations for International Women’s Day.

Deb Capon, who launched her corporate buffet business ‘Scoffers’ after completing the Outset Torbay programme, attended the event.

She said: “It’s really valuable to have the support of other women working on their own.

“Self-employment can be quite isolating at times, so this event will be a great opportunity to meet other like-minded women who face similar challenges in starting and growing their business in Torbay.”

Sandy Eaton is director of Enterprising Women, a networking community of more than 8,000 members.

It provides not-for-profit business support and specialist information to help women start up and grow their businesses.

Ms Eaton said: “The Women of Achievement initiative is an important local platform for recognising the impact that women can have both in business and in their communities, and in doing so, to identify female role models that will inspire women of the future.”
