Networking Event – helping small businesses recruit Apprentices

Outset Torbay clients met for their regular ‘first Monday’ Networking meeting on 1st October, headlined by an interesting talk from Doug Cooper, Training Officer at South Devon College.

Doug explained the modern-style Apprenticeship programme, which offers great benefits to both the Apprentice and the employer. The scheme allows Apprentices to develop their skills in the workplace alongside NVQ training at College, and gives businesses the chance to recruit enthusiastic and committed staff.

Outset Clients and staff were fascinated to learn about the wide range of business areas that support Apprenticeships, including Automotive, Hospitality, Construction, Health & Childcare, Hair & Beauty, Retail, Engineering and even Performing Arts! They were also intrigued to discover that Apprentices aren’t just youngsters these days, but that people of any age or background can enrol on an Apprenticeship scheme; it can be an ideal way to re-train and can make a step into full-time employment.

Of most relevance to Outset Torbay’s clients was the reassurance that employers of any size (from sole-traders to big business) get full support through every stage of the Apprenticeship process, from recruitment to completion, and that 98% of employers who’ve used South Devon College’s scheme say they would thoroughly recommend it!
