New lease of life for Herald site in Brixham

A NEW coffee bar is set to bring a new lease of life for Brixham’s old Herald Express office site. Millie and Me opened its doors for business on 1 March at 1 King Street, Brixham.

The new business is owned by local resident Sophie Bower who has collaborated with her 15-year-old daughter, Millie, to create a vibrant coffee bar and events catering service.

Fresh and locally sourced produce is at the heart of Sophie’s business, she says: “Millie and Me serves homemade cakes, pies and pastries, daily ‘special’ baguettes and paninis made with fresh, seasonal and local ingredients and above all great coffee!”

The building was the former Herald Express office, but with the hard work and support of Sophie’s family and friends, it has been transformed in to a fresh new coffee bar in the heart of the town.

Opening Millie and Me has been a huge milestone for Sophie, who had long dreamt of starting her own business in partnership with her daughter, but struggled with low confidence and fear of business finance.

“I wanted to inspire my daughter Millie by being brave and reaching for something I really wanted. I hoped that by contributing and sharing that achievement, Millie would also grow in confidence and self-belief.”

It was the NESTA neighbourhood challenge in Brixham, a community project run by Brixham Youth Enquiry Service (YES), and local business start-up support programme Outset Torbay that gave Sophie the confidence and skills to realise her business potential.

“We literally would not be where are now without the free business start-up support of Outset Torbay. The encouragement and advice, particularly around finances, was perfectly aimed at our level, so it was easy to understand and follow.”

Outset Torbay is a £1.8m programme funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Torbay Development Agency to help people start their own businesses in Torbay.

Liz Edwards, Enterprise Advisor for Outset Torbay says, “It’s been fantastic to work with Sophie to help develop her business ideas and skills, and now see Millie and Me open for business. We’re looking forward to supporting Sophie as the business develops.”
