Outset Torbay launches 50 new Torbay businesses

Local intensive business start-up support service, Outset Torbay, has announced the launch of its 50th business in Torbay. The 1.8m Torbay Development Agency and European Regional Development Fund funded project which offers free training, mentoring and networking to under-represented groups wanting to start their own business has so far had more than 500 local people accessing their support, but it was hair and beauty salon Forever Beautiful that became the 50th Outset Torbay business when it launched on 19 November.

Becky Forte, owner of Forever Beautiful in the Ellacombe area of Torquay, had always aspired to one day own her own salon, after working as a hairdresser for seven years.

The 24 year old, who recently became unemployed, said, “I had no idea how to start my own business. I went to Next Steps in Torquay who recommended the Outset Torbay business start-up programme and I signed up straight away. The group workshops and one-to-one sessions with my advisor were fantastic. They helped me to fully research and plan my business, giving me the confidence to go for it.”

Becky has also been able to employ a part-time assistant and an apprentice, creating even more jobs for the Bay.

Programme Director, Helen Harman, is delighted with the success of the Outset Torbay programme. “Supporting the creation of 50 new businesses in Torbay is a fantastic achievement. With youth unemployment figures recently reaching record levels, we congratulate Becky on launching her new business in one of Torbay’s more deprived wards and look forward to providing her ongoing support as her business develops.”

Torbay Development Agency’s Director of Economic Strategy, Alan Denby said: “The TDA is very pleased with the progress that Outset Torbay has made in helping 50 businesses to start up within the last 12 months.

“The intensive support programme offered by Outset is a valuable part of the TDA’s commitment to supporting local businesses at every stage of their development. It complements our work with a range of expert providers to generate growth and prosperity in Torbay. All local businesses are urged to keep a close watch on the TDA website at www.torbaydevelopmentagency.co.uk/businesssupport for the latest news on our full range of events, many of which are free.”

Forever Beautiful is located 88 Victoria Road, Torquay, tel 01803 200497.
