The Herald Express South Devon Business Excellence Awards 2012 will celebrate local businesses and encourage entrepreneurs to start up enterprises and boost the Bay’s economy, according to an organisation that helps firms get off the ground.
Local business start-up support programme, Outset Torbay, is one of the latest sponsors backing the prestigious awards.
The 1.8m European Regional Development Fund and Torbay Development Agency funded project is sponsoring the Best New Business award.
Outset Torbay, which provides free, practical training and coaching to people interested in starting a new business in the Bay, is part of YTKO, a national provider of intensive start-up support, enterprise and mentoring.
Helen Harman, Programme Director for Outset Torbay says, “Starting a new business is a huge undertaking. Through our Intensive Start-up Support and Enterprise Coaching programme we are supporting individuals to develop their skills and confidence to overcome the barriers into self-employment.
“The Best New Business category of these important awards presents a fantastic opportunity for us to recognise and reward those individuals who have used sound business techniques to launch a successful and sustainable new business.”
More than 500 people across Torbay have already accessed Outset Torbay’s business start-up support programme, since its launch in November 2010.
“The Outset programme has been invaluable,” says Outset Torbay client Bill Callaghan, who since being made redundant from his teaching post in Brixham, has set up his own business providing an educational tutoring service for children and adults. “Without it I would not have known how to become self-employed. The support has been amazing.”
Alan Denby, Torbay Development Agency’s Director of Economic Strategy & Performance, says, “We are very pleased that one of the TDA’s main delivery partners providing valuable support to new businesses, Outset Torbay, is sponsoring the Best New Business category.
Torbay Development Agency is the headline sponsor of the South Devon Business Excellence Awards as part of our commitment to raise the aspirations and achievements of Torbay businesses. The TDA is working with its partners in the public and private sector to generate entries for the Awards and help to make this year’s event the biggest and best so far”.
Nominations are now being sought for the Herald Express South Devon Business Excellence Awards, which will take place at the Riviera International Conference Centre on 10 February 2012. Closing date for entries is Friday 9 December 2011.
