The struggling economy continues to hit Torbay hard, with latest figures showing that the Bay has the highest percentage of households without work in the South West.
A staggering 25.2%* (10,800) of households in Torbay that include at least one person aged 16-64 are without work. The figure is the highest within the wider South West region, which showed 16.6% of households with no individuals of working in age in employment.
Pressure will fall to politicians to address the region’s unemployment, and future public sector job cuts.
An initiative to help people to create their own jobs through one route of self-employment is already in place in Torbay. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Torbay Development Agency, Outset Torbay is working with people across the Bay to explore their potential for starting their own business. The three-year project, which has recently reached the end of its first year, has already supported the creation of 55 new businesses, working with underrepresented groups through its Intensive Start-up Support programme of workshops and one-to-one coaching.
