In their own words…

In their own words…

With the recession biting hard, Martin became one of the many casualties of a struggling economy, being made redundant from his job as a sales manager for a company selling energy-efficient lighting.

Having spent more than 12 years in the industry, Martin’s passion for helping others reduce their carbon footprint was at his heart and he found it difficult to think about doing anything else. Many would have given up, but thanks to Martin’s entrepreneurial spirit and support from Outset, Martin turned his passion into a viable business.

Martin first became aware of the Outset programme when he signed on at his local Jobcentre Plus. Martin recognised that Outset could offer the guidance and support he needed to get his business idea off the ground. “The Outset programme has been excellent,” he says. “Every session I have attended has given me something of value.”

Daniel was a successful carpenter before he was diagnosed with a rare lung disease seven years ago, which forced him to give up his job and live on benefits. He has been struggling with his health ever since whilst looking for a new career that would fit flexibly around his condition; something he found by pure accident!

“I was given a pump by the hospital which would continually administer my drugs for me, but it would regularly fall out and make me quite ill. I decided to design my own pouch that would hold the pump more effectively and give me better physical and emotional comfort, and it worked really well. I thought ‘if I can do this for my self, I could do it for other people!’”

“When I first started I had no experience in this field and needed some help to put me in the right direction. I found the Outset programme very helpful and it has really increased my self-confidence. The team have been there for me when I needed help and put me in touch with the right people for additional support.”

Tony came to Outset following being made redundant by his electrical employer. After visiting his local Jobcentre Plus, Tony was signposted to Outset to support him in setting up as a self-employed electrician. “I found the Outset sessions informative and very flexible as they suited all attendees of all abilities and it was a great networking opportunity,” says Tony.

“I have put in to practice many of the skills learned including reading body language, time management skills and decision making. The ideas that the Outset advisors have are incredible.”
